The Stages Power meter's battery life is estimated at just over 200 hours. The power meter is motion activated and will broadcast regardless of whether a head unit is present and connected to the power meter and will also continue to stay in active mode for several minutes after the crank stops moving before entering into sleep mode, so please keep this in mind when estimating battery usage as your riding time may not be equal to the amount of time the power meter was broadcasting.

We have made some minor revisions to our firmware that have slightly improved battery life as well as helped remedy other issues that resulted in the appearance of a dead battery. We recommend using the StagesPower app to check for firmware updates on a semi-regular basis to help optimize the function of your power meter.
The StagesPower app is compatible with devices using Bluetooth 4.0 and is available for both iOS and Android operating systems.

Once you have opened the app, you can activate your power meter by spinning the crank and connect by selecting "Connect Via Bluetooth" in the iOS app or selecting Stages Power Meter under Discoverable Devices in the Android App. The StagesPower app will then use your data or WiFi connection to check our server to see if a firmware update is available.
On certain head units, including most Garmin devices, a prompt will pop up on the screen that indicates that the battery is low. If you are getting this prompt on a battery that is new that does not actually appear to be depleted, you may need to update the firmware on your Garmin device. You can check for updates using the Garmin WebUpdater or contact the manufacturer for more detailed help. This prompt can also be caused by the above issue, incorrect battery installed, so please check this as well.
We recommend inspecting your battery door and o-ring to make sure it is sealing in the unit to keep the battery securely in place and sealed away from water intrusion. For tips on removing the door, see our video on changing the battery right here.
For our gen 1 power meters, the battery door should have 3-tabs on the back of the cover that are all the same shape and size, like in the photo below.
The power meter should also have an o-ring that is pressed into the groove around the battery compartment that compresses upon install of the battery cover to seal water out. Note that earlier units use black o-rings that are not easy to spot. The color and size of the o-ring will depend on whether it is a gen 1 or gen 2 unit. If the door is broken or o-ring is missing, you may experience battery drain, power loss to the unit that causes connection drop outs, and other issues.

Is there evidence of water intrusion?
If you have noticed that your door is broken after riding in the rain or notice any water, rust, or corrosion within the power meter, please create a new support ticket with Stages Cycling or Stages Cycling Europe. If you are contacting us outside of business hours, some photos of the power meter may help get a jump start on helping you with your issue.
Is the correct battery installed?
The Stages Power meter uses a CR2032 battery, which is commonly available for most major battery manufacturers. There are several similar sizes you need to be aware of in order to ensure you've put in the correct battery into your power meter. Using a CR2025 or CR2016 may power the unit, but result in several problems such as frequent low battery warnings, loss of power to the unit, etc.
